Bologna coach Thiago Motta insists his side played better than Fiorentina but couldn’t score more goals and complains about a ‘soft’ penalty kick given to the Tuscans.

Bologna suffered their second defeat this season, losing 2-1 at the Stadio Franchi against Fiorentina on Sunday.

“We played a good game against an excellent team,” Motta told DAZN.

“The penalty for Fiorentina was soft. We wanted something special and we could have achieved it, but after all, it’s ok and we must continue like this. This defeat hurts, but we must react in the right way.

“I congratulated Italiano, a coach who has been doing a great job for a long time. You can see his hand in this Fiorentina side, it’s always nice to face him.”

Both Joshua Zirkzee and Nico Gonzalez scored from the spot, but Motta feels the penalty kick for Fiorentina wasn’t so clear.

“To me, it was a soft penalty, sometimes we speak about these situations with referees, but Maresca is a great official,” the ex-Italy international said at a post-match press conference.

“We played a good game, better than Fiorentina, but we didn’t score more goals. Congratulations to Fiorentina, now we are preparing for the next game. We don’t like losing, but we did our best,” Motta continued.

“We played against a team that prevents opponents from keeping possession, but the effective playing time today was 50 minutes. Perhaps we could have played longer.”
