Destiny Udogie made his senior Italy debut today against Malta, making a ‘childhood dream come true,’ and now wants to beat England at Wembley.

The 20-year-old Tottenham Hotspur wing-back came off the bench during the 4-0 victory at the Stadio San Nicola in Bari this evening, replacing Inter man Federico Dimarco.

Although he represented the Azzurri at various youth levels including eight caps for the Under-21 side, this was his first for the senior squad.

“Wearing the Italy jersey was a dream I had since childhood and now it has come true,” Udogie told RAI Sport.

“I am very happy and even happier with the victory that allows us to continue pushing for qualification.”

Italy are now second in the EURO 2024 qualifying group with 10 points from five games, just three behind leaders England.

Ukraine also have 10 points, but have already played six matches, while North Macedonia are on seven points from six games.

It has been a strong start to the season for Udogie, who made the move from Udinese to Premier League leaders Tottenham.

“It is going well, I must continue working hard and keep proving what I can do. I dedicate the debut to my family and all those who love me.”

On Tuesday there is a showdown with England at Wembley Stadium, so Udogie is returning to his new home of London.

“It’s a big game, we will go there to play our way and to win.”

  1. Italy are not on the clear yet. If they can get some sort of result at Wembley then that will certainly help.
