Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has come out in support of national teammate Gianluigi Donnarumma after the latter was subject to booing from the stands before kick off in Italy’s EURO 2024 qualifier against Ukraine on Tuesday night.

Donnarumma, who led Italy out as captain at San Siro, was booed by a number of supporters as he made his way out onto the pitch for what was his second game for Italy at the Stadio Meazza since leaving Milan to join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

Vicario, who a number of fans were keen to see take Donnarumma’s place between the sticks, took to Instagram in the hours after the game to support his national team colleague.

The former Empoli stopper wrote: “The boos are loud enough when you are away, let alone when you are at home. You’ve been great, Donnarumma. Forza Azzurri.”

Italy ran out 2-1 winners on the night thanks to a first-half brace from Inter midfielder Davide Frattesi. Andriy Yarmelenko pulled one back for the visitors a few minutes before the interval.

The result leaves the Azzurri second in qualifying with seven points after four games. Italy currently sit six points behind group leaders England, albeit having played one game fewer.
