Milan are continuing to work on the idea of building a new stadium in the San Donato area of the city, which is reported to be a 70,000-seater arena.
The decision to build outside the city has become inevitable after local authorities officially ruled the second tier of the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza – commonly known as San Siro after the neighbourhood – is protected by the same rules covering historically important structures.
That means it cannot be knocked down or changed, so Milan and Inter both decided to look elsewhere to create a modern stadium.
Milan have reserved an area in San Donato Milanese, as confirmed by Massimiliano Mistretta, the assessor of public works in the town.
“Milan could present their project within a few weeks. The council channels are open with the club, the interest of Milan in San Donato is real and concrete,” he told Il Giorno newspaper.
According to reports, the Rossoneri are planning a stadium with a capacity of between 65,000 and 70,000, so almost as large as the Stadio Meazza.
Their hope is to have it built by the end of 2029, including two raised bridges allowing fans to walk or cycle from the Metro station to the stadium.
