Davy Klaassen is set to join Inter on a free transfer from Ajax, boosting Simone Inzaghi’s midfield options for the next two seasons.
Klaassen will be Inter’s last summer signing. He arrived Friday morning at Malpensa Airport before undergoing his medical with the Nerazzurri and signing a two-year deal with his new club.
He had less than a year left in his contract with Ajax, but the Lancers agreed to send him to the Stadio Meazza on a free transfer. Scorer of 93 goals in 321 appearances with the Dutch giants, Klaassen came through Ajax’s youth sector, making his Eredivisie debut in 2011.
The 30-year-old started his career as an attacking midfielder but can cover any role in the middle of the park. On paper, he’ll be a backup for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Hakan Calhanoglu or Nicolò Barella, giving even more competition to Davide Frattesi and Stefano Sensi.
Klaassen left Ajax for the first time in 2017 joining Premier League side Everton for €27m. However, he failed to justify his price tag at Goodison Park, failing to even score one goal in 16 appearances.
He joined Werder Bremen for €13.5m one year later, returning to Ajax in October 2020 for circa €11m. His spell in Germany was more than decent as he netted 16 goals in 81 games with Werder.
Klassen made his fourth and last season appearance with Ajax last night coming off the bench in a 1-0 loss against Ludogorets which still allowed the Lancers to qualify for the Europa League group stage.
He has 10 goals in 41 appearances with the Netherlands national team and was included in the squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Klassen has won the Dutch title five times with Ajax.
Inter came close to signing Lazar Samardzic from Udinese in August but the deal collapsed after the Nerazzurri failed to reach an agreement with the player’s entourage.
Following the collapsed Samardzic deal, they invested over €30m in Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard and will now complete Klaassen’s free transfer just before the deadline at 19:00 BST.
