During the warm-up, Biraghi held up a flag and showed it to the Fiorentina supporters in the stands, getting a strong reaction.

This symbol represents the historic four quarters of Florence, Santa Croce, San Giovanni, Santa Maria Novella and Santo Spirito, first created in 1343.

Each quarter also has its own symbol and colour for when they participate in the city-wide Calcio Storico match, a Medieval version of the sport with very few rules that crosses over into rugby, boxing and wrestling.

The four symbols are also seen on Biraghi’s captain’s armband, along with DA13, a dedication to forever captain Davide Astori.

It is also a signal to those back in Florence, because 30,000 fans have flocked to the Stadio Artemio Franchi to watch the Conference League Final on giant screens.
