Inter’s Champions League opponents Manchester City put themselves in a position to potentially win the Treble in Istanbul, today beating Manchester United 2-1 to lift the FA Cup.
Pep Guardiola and his men had already secured the Premier League title last month and had the ideal start at Wembley Stadium, with Ilkay Gundogan’s volley from outside the box into the top corner giving them the lead within 12 seconds.
Manchester United were only able to equalise through a Bruno Fernandes penalty, awarded for a fingertip handling offence from Jack Grealish.
That was the first and indeed only goal City have conceded in the FA Cup this season.
Gundogan, whose contract is running down and has been linked with a move to Milan this summer, completed his brace after the restart with another volley, albeit less cleanly struck.
There was a very late scare in stoppages, though, as a mad scramble on a cross into the box eventually saw United clip the crossbar.
Erling Haaland has scored only once in his last seven appearances and barely touched the ball at Wembley Stadium.
It means Manchester City have the extra motivation against Inter of potentially winning the Treble as well as their first ever Champions League trophy.
Inter have won the Champions League/European Cup on three occasions, most recently in 2010 as part of a Treble under coach Jose Mourinho.
