The tension continued in Naples this evening, as Napoli ultras tried to ambush buses taking Eintracht Frankfurt fans away from the city, prevented from doing so by police.

The Partenopei have reached the Champions League quarter-final for the first time in their history, but the match was overshadowed by violent clashes both before and now after the 3-0 win at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Eintracht Frankfurt fans had been banned from attending the game and they were indeed kept out of the stadium, but circa 600 still made the trip to the port city.

They were involved in ugly clashes with police earlier in the afternoon, setting fire to cars, throwing objects and damaging restaurants.

After the match, police were trying to take Eintracht fans away from their hotel on buses when a group of Napoli ultras seeking revenge tried to stage an ambush, according to Sky Sport Italia.

They were blocked off by the riot police, but this delayed the evacuation of the German supporters, who arrived in the city on Tuesday accompanied by Atalanta ultras.

Sadly, the call to avoid falling for provocation and even coach Luciano Spallettiโ€™s appeal for everyone to go home in peace after the match proved fruitless.
