Serie A referee Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi will represent Italy at the upcoming Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The 32-year-old Italian referee started out in amateur football and broke into Serie D in 2015. After five years in the fourth division, she was promoted to Serie C in 2020, where she impressed enough to make her Serie B debut in October 2021. Ferrieri Caputi became the first woman to officiate a Serie A match in October 2022, overseeing Sassuolo’s 5-0 win over Salernitana.

As highlighted by TMW, Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi is one of three Italian representatives heading off to the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, being joined by assistant Francesca Di Monte and VAR official Massimiliano Irrati.

It’s another important step in Ferrieri Caputi’s career and she looks set to continue her work in Serie A in the coming years, adding a breath of fresh air to officiating in the Italian topflight.
