After Portugal officially sacked Fernando Santos, Roma coach Jose Mourinho was mobbed at the airport by local reporters asking if he will take over.

Santos had won the 2016 European Championship and the 2019 edition of the Nations League, but was dismissed after crashing out of the 2022 World Cup in the quarter-finals against Morocco.

Above all, the coach was blamed for leaving Cristiano Ronaldo and Milan star Rafael Leao on the bench for the crucial games.

With exquisite timing, Mourinho landed at Faro Airport this evening with Roma to begin a week of warm weather training and three friendly tests.

Local reporters rushed to mob The Special One and ask if he was going to take over the Portugal job.

He did not give them the soundbite they wanted, but did help a reporter by giving back the microphone cover that was knocked off in the scrum.

While some suggest he could cover both jobs in a dual role, others suggest current Under-21 team boss Rui Jorge could act as caretaker until the end of the season, when Portugal will make a big offer for Mourinho to leave Roma.
