Claudio Marchisio is worried that Romelu Lukaku’s nightmare World Cup with Belgium will have a knock-on effect for Inter and Chelsea. ‘Some games stay with you.’

The centre-forward was in doubt for the tournament at all in Qatar and made only two substitute appearances, having come off the bench only twice for Inter since his initial injury at the end of August.

He missed at least three big chances in the 0-0 draw with Croatia, which saw Belgium eliminated and Lukaku break down in tears.

“Physically, he is on the downward trend in his career, while mentally some games stay with you,” former Juventus and Italy midfielder Marchisio said on RAI Sport as a television pundit.

“He had many chances and didn’t take them, so inevitably a team will pay for that.”

Lukaku will return to Italy after a brief vacation and resume his season with Inter, but his future is up in the air.

Chelsea seem to no longer be eager to renew the €10m loan deal to keep Lukaku at Inter, having purchased him for over €110m in August 2021.

It now remains to be seen how the World Cup disappointment will affect the 29-year-old when the Serie A season resumed on January 4.
