Lotito had purchased Salernitana following their bankruptcy in the summer of 2011, when the club was forced to start again from Serie D – the amateur leagues.

They earned two consecutive promotions to Serie B and finally made the extra step up to Serie A in May 2021.

Lotito knew he would have to sell, as the rules bar one person from owning two clubs in the same division, so with no buyer he ended up putting Salernitana into a blind trust in August to run the side.

With hours to spare before the final deadline on December 31 and the club about to be excluded from Serie A, a sale was agreed with new President Iervolino.

By a twist of fate, Salernitana’s first game of 2022 and the first under their new patron is against Lotito’s Lazio at the Stadio Arechi.

This is because they have been hit by a COVID-19 outbreak at the club and saw their last two games called off.

  1. @Salernitana fans: I truly wished you well, hoped for the best and I don’t actually like Lotito either but what you did is disgracefull and to me, you just became the shame of Serie A.
