Stadio Olimpico, Rome. Capacity: 73,000 seats

Lega Serie A President Paolo Dal Pino insists Serie A stadiums must return to full capacity from 2021-22, adding that football can push more people to get vaccinated.

The Lega Serie A and the Italian Government are reportedly discussing opening stadiums to vaccinated people from next season.

Serie A begins on August 22 and Italian clubs are pushing to re-open stadiums as they’ve lost over €1.2 million during the last year and a half due to the COVID pandemic.

“Football is an important social tool, we are working with the Government to accelerate the vaccination campaign and bring people back to stadiums,” Dal Pino told Il Corriere della Sera.

“Football is an industry that attracts the interest of 38 million people. The Lega Serie A and the FIGC have sent letters to the institutions asking to allow stadiums at full capacity from next season.

“It is not a crazy request, we urge Italians to get vaccinated since only 45% of the population over 12 years has done so.

“Football fans with a green pass could access the stands. We can make a decisive contribution to safeguard the whole country.”

According to reports, the Government could increase crowds, but only to 50 per cent capacity. That would not be enough, according to Dal Pino.

“Absolutely not, I can’t see the reason behind such a decision, we are oriented towards full capacity.”
