UEFA have confirmed the away goals rule will be removed from all their club competitions ahead of 2021-22.
Thus the away goals rule will not be part of European competitions from the upcoming season and President Aleksander Ceferin confirmed the decision.
“The away goals rule will be removed from all UEFA club competitions from the 2021-22 season,” UEFA wrote in a statement.
“Ties in which the two teams score the same number of goals over the two legs will now have two 15-minute periods of extra time, and, if required, penalty kicks.”
President Ceferin then explained the decision to remove the away goals rule.
“The impact of the rule now runs counter to its original purpose as, in fact, it now dissuades home teams – especially in first legs – from attacking,” Ceferin said.
“Because they fear conceding a goal that would give their opponents a crucial advantage.”
