Sofyan Amrabat said he ‘chose with my heart’ as he picked Fiorentina over five other Serie A clubs and thinks he will be able to contribute to ‘many important things’ at the Artemio Franchi.
Amrabat moved from Hellas Verona to Fiorentina in January, but the Viola allowed him to finish the season with the Gialloblu.
“I’m really happy to be here. It’s a great honour,” Amrabat said at a press conference. “I’m a player who follows his feelings and I chose with my heart.
“I talked to all the managers after the match against Hellas, they strongly wanted me. I spoke to five other Italian clubs, but I immediately had a great feeling with Fiorentina.
“I didn’t choose the biggest club on paper, but I chose the project and the objectives. We will be able to do many important things together.”
Amrabat says the coach decides where he plays, but his first impressions of the tactical training has him believing he will be used as a ‘regista’.
“I can play both as a regista and the mezzala. The coach will decide. Right now, I’m training more as a regista in front of the defence,” he added.
“I think that will be the role I will cover, given our formation. I’m someone who wants to learn how to do everything, even to score more.
“The most important thing, however, is to win as a team. All the players want to score, but that’s not my priority.
“Even at Verona, I played far from the area and it’s harder to score in that position. We’ll see what the coach decides at Fiorentina.
“If I play as a regista, that won’t be my priority. I want to win with the team and all the games we play. Obviously, I can’t wait to score in front of the fans, who I hope will be back soon.”
Amrabat said his former coach at Verona, Ivan Juric, wished him good luck at the Artemio Franchi.
“He didn’t give me any advice. When I talked to him about Florence, he told me that Fiorentina are a good team and he said, ‘good luck’.”
He chose No34 at Fiorentina, as a tribute to Abdelhak Nouri, who suffered a cardiac arrhythmia attack during a pre-season friendly at Ajax.
“I chose No34, for Nouri of Ajax. He’s still alive but he can’t live like himself. I have chosen this number for him and I would like to keep it as long as possible, until the end of my career.”
