Although he was also in talks with another club, it seems a deal has been done with Lecce for a loan with option to buy, which becomes an obligation if the Salentini avoid relegation.
Sportitalia also insist that Lecce have agreed terms with Genoa to take Saponara on loan for the rest of the season.
They had to wait for the all-clear from his parent club, Fiorentina, and that has now arrived.
He too will have his medical on Monday or Tuesday.
The 28-year-old trequartista made only four Serie A appearances for Genoa this season, the most recent on November 3.
