Inter were leading 3-1 until Muriel curled in a free kick and Jordan Veretout scored a penalty that was awarded by VAR yet caused controversy as Danilo D’Ambrosio’s handball did not appear to be deliberate.

“Everyone’s seen it: there was first a foul on D’Ambrosio and then there was no penalty,” Handanovic told Sky Sport Italia.

“There’s no need to speak: it was for all to see. Now we’re angry, indeed: frustrated. But it’s normal.

“They weren’t dead at 3-1 down, but they were running behind the ball. Then there was that Muriel free kick, which got them back into the game.

“We got sucked in a bit too much before their third goal. Everyone made mistakes. The wind gave the free kick more spin and power.

“You could see it, he said it too. He took it perfectly: it was a great goal, but…”

Finally the goalkeeper was asked about Mauro Icardi, whom he replaced as Nerazzurri captain and who remains out of the squad…

“We can’t talk about this every day…” he concluded.
