The French captain was sent off for butting the Italy centre-back, with the Azzurri going on to lift the trophy on penalties.

Despite being on the receiving end of the assault though, Matrix admits he was simply trying to ensure the red card was produced.

“I’d have stayed there on that turf all night, but it didn’t hurt me,” Materazzi explained to Balalaika.

“The penalty? You have to try and put off the penalty taker, then you just try to get back into the game, making as few mistakes as possible.”
