The Orobici are in an impressive sixth place in the Serie A table and their season has moved beyond mere safety.
“It’s wonderful to feel the affection of the fans and now our objectives have changed,” Gomez told ItaSportPress during a signing.
“We are in the top section of the standings and want to take Atalanta back into Europe. The transfer window has closed, so we hope that the new players can settle in quickly and those who remained continue at that level.
“I really like Anthony Mounier, he has the kind of dribbling skills and a great left foot that we were lacking. Some of us are creeping towards 30 and are almost old, but it’s good for Italian football that Atalanta have so many young players.”
Is it true that Gomez received a huge offer to leave Atalanta in January?
“I am of a certain age now and am really happy in Bergamo, I’ve always been clear on that. If there was an offer I couldn’t refuse, the club and I would have to think about it. I did receive an offer recently, but despite what was written, it was not from China.”
Papu is very good friends with teammate Petagna and they often exchange pranks on social media. Last week Petagna changed Gomez’s Wikipedia page to read: ‘He is the same height as a can of Fanta.’
“I am a very social player and we often joke by publishing images on Instagram of our faces on movie posters and stuff like that. Along with being an integral part of the Atalanta strike force, he’s also a really good guy.”
