Sunderland are prepared to match Southampton’s offer for Napoli striker Manolo Gabbiadini, according to reports in Italy.

The Saints had seemingly been the only remaining candidates for the Italy international, as the likes of West Ham United, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, Wolfsburg and Borussia Monchengladbach had pulled out.

However, the failure to complete the move for €16m plus €4m bonuses has alerted another Premier League side to his availability.

The Corriere del Mezzogiorno newspaper claims Sunderland are ready to dive in and match Southampton’s offer.

This may well be why Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis is so hesitant to complete the transfer, as he is intent on getting €20m for Gabbiadini.

Sky Sport Italia also suggest Napoli want a sell-on clause as part of the deal, so could make a further profit if he impresses enough in the Premier League to earn a bigger move in future.
