Sassuolo President Giorgio Squinzi acknowledges they have “not achieved the results we were expecting” in Serie A and the Europa League.

The Neroverdi crashed out of the continental competition with Thursday’s 3-2 defeat at Athletic Club Bilbao.

“We have not achieved the results we were expecting,” confessed Squinzi on Radio CRC.

“The season is still long and I am sure we’ll get back on track. Unfortunately we lost the Europa League by allowing Rapid Vienna to score two late goals at the Mapei Stadium. In Serie A too we are paying the price for conceding in the final minutes.

“We haven’t achieved what we set out to at the start of the season, partly because we lost our best players to injury. The latest is for Davide Biondini, who we’re unlikely to see again this term.”

There are fears Biondini ruptured his Achilles Tendon during the Bilbao match.

This was Sassuolo’s first ever European participation, but Squinzi warns it’s not something he’d necessarily like to repeat.

“(Napoli President Aurelio) De Laurentiis was right when he said the Europa League is a competition that saps your energy and is thus damaging for Serie A form.”
