Costa was booked for raking his nails down Leonardo Bonucci’s face in the first half, then petulantly kicked the ball into the stands after an offside call.
Coach Julen Lopetegui immediately hauled the Chelsea striker off the field, realising he was in danger of a dismissal.

It is certainly not the first time Diego Costa has run the risk of a red card, but on the international stage in a crunch World Cup qualifier it was almost very costly indeed.
It’s safe to assume Reina gave him a good talking to behind closed doors.
