New Fiorentina signing Gilberto describes the move as ‘a big step in my career’ as he’s officially presented.

The right-back has joined from Botafogo in a deal believed to be worth around €1m, and spoke to fans and media this afternoon.

“It’s a big step in my career,” the 22-year-old admitted.

“I hope to do very well in Florence, and in this League. I saw the game against Barcelona, then I played against Chelsea.

“I immediately had a very good impression, because the team is very strong. There are good players here, and it’s easy to play with them.

“The Coach has given me a lot of confidence to play the ball on the ground, and try to make the play with my technique.”

Gilberto also expanded on what he feels his best role is, and explained his decision to wear the number 3 shirt.

“I feel very good wide on the right, and [Coach] Paulo Sousa has also tried me in the middle of the park. I played that role in Brazil.

“I’m happy to play in any position Sousa asks me to.

“Cafu? He’s my idol. He won a lot of titles and had a great career in Italy. In Brazil I [almost] always played at right-back.

“As for the number 3, I chose it because there were not one of my options, and also Roberto Carlos was one of my idols and he played with that number.”
