Sampdoria captain Angelo Palombo says his team is stronger than Genoa 'on paper', but reality will be different in the Derby della Lanterna.

After Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic's optimistic statements ahead of the game against Genoa, the Blucerchiati captain opted for a more subdued approach to the game.

“On paper we're stronger, yes,” he said in today's press conference.

“But the players we purchased, like [Samuel] Eto'o and [Luis] Muriel, are still not in the right condition.

“When they reach their peak we'll be stronger. But other teams have reinforced their squads too.

“Lately we haven't gotten the results we wanted, and we conceded a few goals too many.

“But that can happen over the course of a year.

“Genoa are an excellent team and right now they're in a better condition than we are.

“They're fast on their legs and very committed to the midfield, both physically and tactically.

“They have players who can decide a match, like [Diego] Perotti and [M'Baye] Niang.

“I also like [Andrea] Bertolacci a lot.

“If we want to win then we've got to play a great game. A pinch of luck won't do us any harm either."

Sampdoria have been under the spotlight this winter for their glamorous transfer market that included the likes of Samuel Eto'o, Luis Muriel and Federico Bonazzoli.

“The new arrivals adopted the Samp mentality and they understand how a derby is meant to be approached.

“Some of them are champions, like Eto'o, who already played in Champions League finals and has great experience.

“The team is more important than the individual and tomorrow we're going to give everything to win this game.”
