Pippo Inzaghi explained tactical switch during the 2-0 win over Chievo, but saw more Milan errors in defence.
The Coach started with a 4-3-3, but after 40 minutes moved the same players to a 4-2-3-1 with Giacomo Bonaventura pushing up and Jeremy Menez going to the centre.
“We have these two systems and Bonaventura allows me to change even during the game. He did well in that new role, although obviously better in the position he’s more accustomed to,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.
“We almost conceded the equaliser on the counter from a corner, which would’ve been terrible. We kept a clean sheet tonight, even though we allowed too many chances. Perhaps we are too generous in pouring forward.
“At least the fans are entertained and we are the top scorers in the League this season.”
Menez has made it clear he prefers to play a more central role behind the striker, so not in the 4-3-3.
“He probably does feel better there, but I cannot build my team around one player and have to work on everyone.
“I thought that by changing system and opening up the field we could create more opportunities. It was a good response from the squad and I expected that, as I saw them work hard throughout the week.”
Alex was impressive at the back and Milan kept their first clean sheet of the season.
“We signed Alex to strengthen our defence and he had a great game tonight. He’s good in the air, reads situations well and brings that bit of experience we needed. We have many centre-backs who can alternate next to him, but it’s not as if conceded goals are always down to the defenders. The whole team has to contribute.”
Mattia De Sciglio was decisive to prevent a Chievo equaliser, as he blocked off Dejan Lazarevic when it was three against one.
“I was glad De Sciglio did well tonight, as he was criticised recently and showed great character,” said Inzaghi.
“On the corner I could not understand why we weren’t tracking back. At San Siro we can’t all go into the box and not track back when the corner breaks. You can’t get away with that in Serie A.”
Keisuke Honda is now top scorer in Serie A with four goals, having curled in a splendid free kick.
“I said in America this summer that Honda had an incredible desire to prove himself, he works so hard and is always early to training. I am glad for him, as he deserves the applause of our fans.”
