Portugal defender Fabio Coentrao has been ruled out of the World Cup after being stretchered off against Germany.
It was immediately clear the groin injury he sustained in the 4-0 defeat on Monday was serious.
Tests have now confirmed a grade two tear of the adductor muscle, meaning he won’t play any more part in the tournament.

“I’m afraid that my World Cup has come to an end,” admitted the left-back straight after the game.
“I think it’s a serious injury, though I hope it’s not. These things happen in our profession and, unfortunately, today it fell to me. It’s a very sad day, one of the saddest of my life.”
Teammates Hugo Almeida and Rui Patricio also picked up injuries in the same match, but grade one tears are not considered serious.
