The now retired defender spoke to Deejay TV and looked back at pictures of the Final win over Bayern Munich in 2010.

“It was above all the emotion of an Interista and I became a fan of this team precisely because they were missing the Champions League,” said Materazzi.

“How was I able to lift Mourinho? He is small and there he was as light as a butterfly. He was flying because he had achieved something truly important.”

Matrix also won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, but had to wait another four years to find similar joy at club level.

“I started out winning the most wonderful things, then moved on to all that was left. Usually a player’s career goes the other way, but I had this good fortune and the Champions League was the last trophy I was missing.

“I think in a career 90 per cent of it is hard work, hunger, desire and coming from the streets. Those who come from the streets rarely fall back down.”
