Giovanni Trapattoni defended Antonio Conte’s use of squad rotation. “Juventus cannot snub any competition.”

The Bianconeri Coach was criticised by some fans and media for the 1-1 Europa League draw with Fiorentina on Thursday, as he made five changes from the side that beat them 1-0 a few days earlier in Serie A.

“The result counts more than anything else and Juventus cannot snub any competition. They never have and never will,” Trapattoni told Tuttosport.

“Conte knows how to act, as only he knows the real condition of his players. He has experience and is a winner with charisma and clear ideas. He has what it takes to make the right decisions and the club is also well-structured, accustomed to fighting on numerous fronts.

“He is right to alternate the players, as this is indispensable to win the Scudetto and try to go all the way in the Europa League.

“Conte has created a winning group that is also consolidated psychologically. They know their worth and that they can reach their aims. It is the right attitude, one of a team that always wants to improve.”
Squad rotation is far more popular now than it was during Trapattoni’s time at Juventus, as the fixture list has expanded and with it the number of players at the disposal of each club.

“I always followed one winning rule: first and foremost achieve the primary objective, or at least the one you are closest to, then you can rest someone.

“Conte is doing well and getting the best out of the group. Besides, in football there’s no guarantee you’ll win if you field all the best players.”

Fans argue Juve should’ve prioritised the Europa League knockouts when already 14 points clear at the top of the Serie A table, even if Roma have a game in hand.

“The Scudetto is not sealed yet, even if they have a big advantage,” continued Trap.

“You can never underestimate anyone or anything. Conte certainly can’t risk putting the title back in contention, as we are only in March.

“I really admire this squad that is going towards an historic result, the third consecutive Scudetto. I hope Antonio can win the Europa League too.”
