Galatasaray Coach Roberto Mancini insists Inter could not have won the Champions League in 2010 had it not been for him.

The former Manchester City boss left San Siro in 2008, only for Jose Mourinho to take over and win a historic treble for the Nerazzurri two years later.

“Mourinho won the Champions League with Inter because he inherited a good squad,” Mancini said at his pre-match Press conference ahead of his side’s Champions League game with Mourinho’s Chelsea.

“A squad that, in the same way as it is at Manchester City, I built.

“It was a team that had a very strong mentality.

“When I arrived at Inter, they played a poor brand of football. I changed that.

“To win the Champions League you have to be lucky.

“It is a difficult competition and it is strange because you can do well in the Group Stage until December but then everything is different in February.

Mancini was then asked about his current side’s chances of progressing to the quarter-finals.

“We don’t have a great chance, even at home, because Chelsea are one of the best teams in Europe,” he replied.

“But it gives us great pride to be able to play Chelsea and we need to do our best.”
