That comeback at San Siro was sparked by an extremely controversial penalty for Walter Samuel’s handling offence, though at the time it was believed the referee had awarded it for an Andrea Ranocchia push.
“My only comment is on the penalty,” snapped Moratti. “A penalty like this changes a game. It is unjust, because all this makes a team feel it has no respect.
“I think it has been 21 Serie A rounds since we received a penalty in our favour. Statistically that seems pretty impossible that we haven’t had any fouls on our players in half a season.
“I no longer believe in the good faith of the referees.”
This phrase implies officials are purposefully refusing to give Inter spot-kicks, or giving decisions against them.
Coach Andrea Stramaccioni had made similar accusations, insisting referee Gervasoni “invented a penalty. It wasn’t an error, he simply took on the responsibility of awarding a penalty for something that never happened.”
