The Napoli winger, who plays as a right-back for the Azzurri, was down injured after a nasty clash of heads with Davit Manoyan, but the referee waved play on and Armenia equalised.

“I don’t remember much about that moment,” confessed Maggio. “I couldn’t follow what was happening. It was a heavy blow to the head, but I feel better now.”

Italy went on to win 3-1 with second half goals from Daniele De Rossi and Pablo Daniel Osvaldo adding to Andrea Pirlo’s penalty.

“In the first half we struggled, but after the break the spaces opened up and we did well to make the most of them.

“I tried to push down the wing and we are happy, as today we managed to put into practice some of the things we do in training.”
