Fiorentina have rejected reports that they made a bid for Villarreal’s Giuseppe Rossi during the summer transfer window.

“We never contacted him,” new Viola sporting director Daniele Prade stated when questioned about the Italian international.

“He’s a really good player who would do well at any club, but he has high wages and we don’t know when he’ll be ready to play again.”

The American born forward was available for transfer after his side’s relegation last season, but no Serie A outfit would take a gamble on him given that he’ll be sidelined until 2013 because of knee ligament damage.

Rossi, born in 1987, has spent just six months in the Italian top flight during a loan spell at Parma in 2007.

In October 2011 he snapped ligaments in his right knee. While trying to regain fitness for Euro 2012, he suffered the same injury again in April.
