As a result of an investigation, the team have confirmed this evening the decision to expel the 23-year-old from the tournament with immediate effect.
“He discriminated, insulted and violated the dignity of the South Korean football team and the South Korean people,” team chief Gian Gilli told reporters this evening.
Switzerland were beaten 2-1 by the Koreans on Sunday and must beat Mexico in their final group game on Wednesday to advance to the next stage of the competition.
Morganella, who has spent the past two seasons at Novara, only made his senior debut for his country two months ago.
