Inter captain Javier Zanetti has admitted that his outfit won’t start the new season as one of the favourites for the Scudetto.

“There are some better equipped sides than us when it comes to fighting for the championship,” the veteran told the Corriere dello Sport.

“We must just concentrate on preparing ourselves as best we can and in a humble manner.

“Juventus will be the side to beat, also because they have made a few important signings to add to an already good side.

“Milan also still have some world class players.”

The Beneamata had a nightmare 2011-12 campaign, going through three different Coaches and eventually finishing the season in sixth position.

With no Champions League football revenue on the horizon, the Nerazzurri are making changes to their squad this summer.

Lucio looks set to join Juventus, while Douglas Maicon and Julio Cesar could also be on their way out of the San Siro.

“Am I surprised about Lucio? I didn’t even think that he was leaving… A new era, which will be full of success, is about to start at Inter,” Zanetti added.

Zanetti has been at Inter for 18 years and at the age of 38 is still confident that he can be of service to the Italian club.

“If I realise that I am no longer of use to the team on the pitch then I will talk honestly with the President and directors,” he added.

“I need just three games to reach 800 matches with Inter, 22 more to tie with Gianluca Pagliuca with regards to total Serie A appearances, but I’m not looking at numbers. What counts are the results of the team.”
