Another novelty came in the form of Chiellini being deployed at left-back so Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Ranocchia could partner each other in central defence again for the first time since their season at Bari together.

Prandelli lined his team up in a 4-4-2, but also experimented with an attacking trident comprised of Stefano Mauri, Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini.
