The Old Lady is still in the market for a centre-forward despite signing Luca Toni from Genoa last week on a free transfer.

Juventus were at pains to stress that Toni wasn't signed as a replacement for Fabio Quagliarella who suffered a season-ending injury against Parma on Thursday.

That has led the media to believe that Juventus will open their wallet again for a player capable of stepping into Quagliarella's shoes for the final six months of the season.

La Gazzetta dello Sport understands a Juventus scout watched Maxi Lopez play against Fiorentina at the Artemio Franchi on Sunday.

Juventus bid for the 26-year-old Argentine during the summer only to see Catania discourage their interest.

Catania general manager Pietro Lo Monaco insists Maxi isn't for sale in January, but Juventus hope to force the issue.

Gigi Del Neri is said to admire Maxi's ability to play as a second striker, above all on the counter attack, however, Juventus' general manager Beppe Marotta and their President Andrea Agnelli are keen to see that the club's money is spent with care.

The risk of Maxi's price rising in the January transfer window could prove too high, yet Juventus' other targets, namely Atletico Madrid's Diego Forlan and Villarreal's Giuseppe Rossi would be substantially more expensive.

If the Bianconeri fail to persuade Catania into letting Maxi leave, they will turn their attention to more modest targets like Udinese's Antonio Floro Flores, Palermo's Massimo Maccarone and Sampdoria's Nicola Pozzi.
