Marouane Fellaini had become Napoli’s top target for the midfield, but even if Manchester United did loan him out, the Belgian would still cost £100,000 per week in wages.
Leiva would be considerably cheaper and Liverpool are prepared to loan him out, perhaps even paying a portion of his salary while in Naples.
It was Benitez who first signed Leiva at Anfield in 2007, but the 27-year-old only started five matches in 2014.
He also blamed the club for missing out on Brazil’s World Cup squad.
Italian media have also picked up on the Lucas Leiva link, but insist Fellaini could well arrive too.
Napoli are also in negotiations with Liverpool to take Daniel Agger on loan.
