Mario Gomez is reportedly not ready to return to action for Fiorentina until at least February, prompting La Viola’s transfer work.
After losing Giuseppe Rossi this week for a matter of months with a knee injury, the Florence outfit were seen as assessing their German forward’s own return from knee trouble before taking action in the January transfer window.
Whilst indications in the media earlier this week spoke of a potential return for Gomez from the bench by Week 20 and to the starting line-up by Week 21, at the end of January, the Gazzetta dello Sport suggest otherwise.
The pink paper are running the line that the 28-year-old is still struggling with inflammation and remains in only the first stage of a return to training – working to a specific, solo routine.
Believing that Gomez faces at least another four to five games on the sidelines, the report is that Fiorentina are going to look to sign a short-term option in the market to boost their attack and are the latest to be linked with Alessandro Matri.
Reports elsewhere suggest La Viola are also monitoring Antonio Cassano’s availability.
