Federico Chiesa struck twice in the final minutes to send Fiorentina through to the Coppa Italia quarter-final, as Torino were too wasteful.
These two sides are already battling for a top six finish in Serie A and went head-to-head for a place in the Coppa Italia quarter-final, where they’ll face either Roma or Virtus Entella. The Viola threw Luis Muriel in from the start for his debut, benching Giovanni Simeone, while Simone Zaza and Emiliano Moretti were unavailable for Toro.

Ola Aina turned a free header over in the opening minutes and Edimilson Fernandes drilled wide, but Muriel’s roll across the face of goal was intercepted inches before Chiesa could tap in. On the resulting corner, a Chiesa strike was charged down by Soualiho Meite after Salvatore Sirigu fumbled. After a VAR evaluation, the referee confirmed his original decision not to award a penalty, as the arms were across his torso.
Fiorentina went close again just before the break, Jordan Veretout’s volley from the edge of the box palmed off the line by Sirigu, then the goalkeeper got down again to deny the Kevin Mirallas angled drive.
Toro came out fighting after the restart, Iago Falque creating panic with a mazy run and Belotti twice turning just wide from close range.
Gerson was horribly caught in possession, sending Iago Falque clear on goal, but Alban Lafont performed a desperate block with his legs.
Ola Aina’s cross found Lorenzo De Silvestri for a free header over the bar, then the wing-back did get a volley in the back of the net on 79 minutes, but only after he had been flagged offside.
Instead, Fiorentina broke the deadlock with a classic counter-attack. Substitute Simeone started from the centre-circle, shrugged off two challenges and his shot was only beaten away by Sirigu into the path of Chiesa.
There was almost a second in similar circumstances, this time Chiesa rolling across for Bryano Dabo, but the finish was weak and straight at Sirigu.
Chiesa thought his second goal had been disallowed for a push on Lyanco, but the referee changed his mind and allowed it to stand.
