Milan coach Stefano Pioli explains why he decided to use Rafael Leao as a False 9 in the Derby della Madonnina against Inter.

It kicks off at San Siro at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

The Scudetto is going to the Nerazzurri, but the aim today is to postpone the party so it doesn’t coincide with the Derby della Madonnina.

Milan need to do what they’ve failed to in the last five editions of the derby – avoid defeat – as a win would mathematically seal the title.

“What counts is how we end the season, this is a game that weighs heavily on the table and on the fans. It is the derby, we haven’t won it for a long time and winning would be very important,” Pioli told DAZN.

Pioli tactical surprise

The coach surprised many by leaving Olivier Giroud on the bench and using Rafael Leao as a False 9.

“The idea is to give fewer reference points and allow us to attack the space. We’ll see what we manage to do tonight.”

His defence is decimated by a ban for Malick Thiaw, while Simon Kjaer and Pierre Kalulu are injured.

“We must defend well without doubt, we lost many duels in the last derby and allowed space behind our defence. We will try to be more prepared on the situations where Inter hurt us in previous games.”
