Daniele De Rossi explains his choices for the Europa League quarter-final against Milan, picking Chris Smalling and Leonardo Spinazzola for Roma.

It kicks off at San Siro at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

You can follow all the build-up and action as it happens from this game, Liverpool-Atalanta and Viktoria Plzen-Fiorentina on the LIVEBLOG.

The Giallorossi lost here 3-1 in Serie A in mid-January, one of the final matches before the club sacked Jose Mourinho to bring in De Rossi.

They have since lost only two fixtures, against Inter and Brighton, but Evan Ndicka is suspended, Sardar Azmoun injured and Dean Huijsen ineligible due to Financial Fair Play restrictions.

It means Smalling gets only his second start since September and makes his seasonal debut in the Europa League.

“Smalling is a player with a lot of experience in Europe. I would’ve started him in Serie A, but we decided it was best to reserve him for Europe,” De Rossi told Sky Sport Italia.

“Diego Llorente played against Lazio and did well, Smalling worked well in training.”

The other major doubt was at left-back between Leonardo Spinazzola and Angelino, won by the Italian.

“He has different characteristics from Angelino, as he can let you break the press. Spinazzola has a change of pace that is different and takes the ball towards the opposition goal. He gives us different solutions.”

Roma have been revitalised under De Rossi and winning the Derby della Capitale against arch-rivals Lazio at the weekend was a huge boost.

“Yes, we are thoroughly convinced of our own capabilities. Errors can happen sometimes, but the important thing is that the players believe in themselves.”

This is De Rossi’s first time at San Siro as an opposition coach, so how does it feel to be here on a European night?

“I’ve experienced it many times as a player, but it’s a different view when I am standing still on the touchline. On the other hand, I have less time to look around than I did when I was a player.

“It is certainly emotional and a wonderful stage for football.”
