Lazio defender Stefan De Vrij has ruled out a move away from the capital club after an impressive first season with the Biancoceleste.

The Dutch international has been one of the stars of the Aquile’s excellent season under Stefano Pioli and has attracted interest from Manchester United.

However, the 23-year-old was keen to quash rumours that his future in Rome depended on Champions League qualification.

“I’m happy at Lazio and I’ll still be here next year,” he told Fox Sports.

“I hope to play in the Champions League with this shirt, but that doesn’t determine my future. If we don’t qualify, it wouldn’t change anything – I want to stay here.”

The centre back has been out for several weeks with an injury and is line for a return soon, but his absence has been sorely felt by the capital club.

“I can’t say when I will be back playing and it’s not been easy to stay away from the pitch at this moment.

“Here in Rome, I’ve learned a lot and become a better defender. I'm really happy with the choice I made.”
