“The two teams were certainly not helped by the state of the pitch, as we both have players who love to pass the ball to feet, but Fiorentina adapted better to the circumstances.

“We had a few good counter-attacks that we should’ve made more of, but this is football and you need to take your chances.

“Now we must focus on the next game, as we know it won’t be easy away to Milan. We’ll try to win as many as we can and then see where we are at the end of the season.

“We’re having a great campaign regardless of today’s result. We are still fifth, which is an excellent position, and it’s no shame to lose in Florence. We go forward with heads held high and chests puffed out.

“The Champions League? We are ambitious, but let’s be honest even being in the Europa League would be an extraordinary result considering where we started from.

“The important thing is to always play with enthusiasm and go out there to have fun with our football. The greatest victory for Sampdoria would be to end the season with no regrets.”
