“One always hopes for a better result,” ex-President Moratti told Sky Sport Italia.

“There have been improvements in the style of football, but we certainly didn’t expect such a difficult season.

“Should we still trust Mancini? He did well and won here in his first spell at the club. I do trust him, as he faces obstacles in a serious and proud manner, which will certainly prove useful. He has already shown me how much this means to him.”

Yet ultras are losing patience and after last week’s 3-1 defeat to Sassuolo angered Mauro Icardi and Fredy Guarin.

The players threw their jerseys to the travelling fans, who promptly threw them back again.

“When it comes to the fans, I’d talk about all of them in general and not just those in the Curva. The team appears to be pretty well supported and attacking them would be counter-productive.”
