It is no secret that David Lopez was well down the list of preferences for Rafa Benitez, but talks for the likes of Marouane Fellaini, Lucas Leiva and Javier Mascherano failed.
There is now the revelation that 23-year-old Barcelona youth product Romeu was also an option.
“It’s true, Napoli did come forward for my client this summer asking for a season-long loan from Chelsea,” agent Javier Diaz told CalcioNapoli24.
“However, Chelsea had to turn them down because they had already reached an agreement with Stuttgart.
“Romeu is currently playing in the Bundesliga, but if Napoli had made the approach earlier, things probably would’ve turned out differently.”
