A sensational new twist in the Davide Astori tale, as after renewing his Cagliari contract he’s expected to join Roma.

The centre-back had been in advanced negotiations with Lazio, but the talks officially broke down today with a statement from the Sardinians.

It seems they turned down the €7m price-tag and told Cagliari their interest in the player was formally concluded.

The club then announced Astori has extended his contract by another three years, as it had been due to expire in June 2015.

However, that doesn’t mean he will remain with a Cagliari jersey on his back for long.

Sky Sport Italia claim the contract extension is just so that Roma can take Astori on loan for €2m with an option to buy at the end of the season for a further €6m.

Giallorossi director general Mauro Baldissoni hinted at a new arrival this evening in an interview with Roma Channel.

“There will be another buy, in fact we could possibly close another deal today, but I won’t say any more.”

It is now believed he was referring to Astori, who was snatched from under the noses of their arch rivals Lazio.
