Szczęsny: Pogba, Di Maria not at Juventus for fourth-place finish

Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny has said the club’s new signings suggested they will be title challengers again this season.

The Bianconeri won nine Serie A titles in a row from 2012 to 2020 but have finished fourth in each of the last two campaigns, without ever really looking to challenge for the title.

But January’s signing of Dušan Vlahović coupled with the arrivals of Ángel Di Maria, Paul Pogba and Serie A Defender of the Year Gleison Bremer this summer have increased the quality of the squad Szczęsny expects the side to push on.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Roma goalkeeper said: “Di Maria and Pogba inspire confidence the rest of the group.

“Ángel, Paul and Bremer have not chosen Juventus to finish fourth – they want trophies.

“After last season which you cannot define as positive, our duty is to try to win the title.”

Szczęsny’s words echoed those of coach Massimiliano Allegri who recently said Juve had a duty to win Serie A.

As well as their nine consecutive titles, Juve won the Coppa Italia five times in that run – including in the 2020-21 when they failed to win the Scudetto.

It means last season was their first without a trophy since 2010-11.
