Luciano Spalletti has quite a few injury problems to contend with, missing Francesco Totti, Alessandro Florenzi, Kostas Manolas, Thomas Vermaelen, Emerson Palmieri and Mario Rui.

Antonio Rudiger again starts in the centre with Juan Jesus re-routed to the left, while Mohamed Salah, Radja Nainggolan and Diego Perotti fan out behind Capocannoniere Edin Dzeko.

Bologna have lost their way recently and they too have some serious issues, as Simone Verdi has been ruled out for three months by ankle surgery.

Domenico Maietta, Antonio Mirante and suspended captain Daniele Gastaldello are also absent.

The Olimpico is a familiar venue for many of the Bologna players, as Umar Sadiq, Vasilis Torosidis, Federico Viviani, Federico Di Francesco and Mattia Destro are all ex-Roma men.

The last six meetings between these sides, home and away, provided a total of 23 goals. They shared the spoils in both last season’s games.

Bologna have beaten Roma only once in the last 21 years, a 3-2 thriller at the Olimpico in September 2012. Home and away in all competition, that interrupts a run of seven draws and eight defeats.

There was a huge storm in Rome this evening with fallen trees and flooding blocking off many roads, even killing two people in the larger area.

The pitch has so far held out remarkably well.
