Injuries cost Juventus over €20m last season – report

A study carried out by insurance group Howden revealed that injuries suffered by Juventus players last season cost the club over €20m.

The results of the study were calculated by multiplying the daily cost of a player’s salary by the number of days they were unavailable due to injury. The post COVID era has featured an incredibly busy schedule, increasing the number of injuries, in particular muscle issues, suffered by players.

Looking at Europe’s top five leagues, the total number of injuries for last season sat at 4810, a 20% increase to the 3988 injuries suffered in the 2020-21 campaign. The Premier League suffered the highest number of injuries with 1231, far above the lowest, Ligue 1, who had only 691.

As revealed by Howden, Juventus’ injuries were the most costly in Serie A in the 2021-22 season, costing the club €22.6m total. Just behind them were Napoli (€11.78m), Milan (€9.76m) and Torino (€6.31m).

The Serie A clubs to suffer the least from this were Venezia (€680,000), Empoli (€790,000) and Udinese (€1.11m).
