Wolfsburg make Juve lose Draxler

Bild are also reporting that Schalke will take Julian Draxler off the market because Wolfsburg beat the Juventus offer.

The news emerged out of nowhere late on Saturday evening, starting on Sky Sport Italia and spreading rapidly through a number of sources.

They suggested Schalke 04 had suddenly made Draxler unavailable when a deal with Juve had seemed imminent for €26m plus €6m bonuses.

This is because Wolfsburg were prepared to beat the Juventus proposal and there is no intention of strengthening a Bundesliga rival.

Wolfsburg are in need of a big signing after selling Kevin de Bruyne to Manchester City and Ivan Perisic to Inter.

Draxler fits the bill, so Juventus will be left out in the cold as part of this battle between German clubs.

Bild reports today that Draxler went into the locker room after the 3-0 defeat to Wolfsburg on Saturday and asked his teammates if he "looked good in a Wolfsburg shirt."

A definitive decision is expected by lunchtime, but the Bianconeri are already looking elsewhere.

They have a deal in place with Olympique Marseille for Mario Lemina, on loan with option to buy and sending Paolo De Ceglie and Mauricio Isla to France for one season.

If Draxler is indeed off limits, then it’ll be full steam ahead for Zenit midfielder Axel Witsel.

An intermediary confirmed last night that Zenit gave the all-clear for Witsel to leave on a €3m loan with option to buy for €22m plus bonuses.

Milan are the favourites for the Belgium international, but if Juve come in then they have the upper hand.
